Since its inception in the early 1980s the BioThermoKinetics research community has led the way in the study of the behaviour, control and regulation of the living cell. Our guiding philosophy has been that it is not enough to study only the properties of the components of the cell but also their interactions, that it is not enough merely to make the maps of all of these interactions but also to study the network behaviour quantitatively using theoretical frameworks such as metabolic control analysis. We have developed theory, experimental approaches, computer software and models to further these aims. Now the rest of biology has caught up with us and we have entered the era of Systems Biology. The name-change of our study group agreed on at our last meeting and the title of this meeting reflect this. However, we could have chosen the alternative meeting title: “"BioThermoKinetics: defining Systems Biology"”: this would have reflected the continued importance of our philosophy of integrating quantitative experimentation and computer modelling within a theoretical framework in order to understand the phenomenon of life at the molecular level.

International advisory board:
Local organizing group:
The local organizing group is enthusiastic about expanding the geography of the BTK: International Study Group for Systems Biology meetings to the East of Europe. This will give a good opportunity for the BTK community to learn more about our small but colourful country. We hope the location of the 12th BTK meeting in Lithuania will be favourable for the attendance of participants from the neighbouring countries.
Publications |
As usual in BTK meetings, apart from presenting a poster or lecture, all participants are invited to submit their contribution to the BTK 2006 in written form. There are two possibilities this time:
1. Manuscript submission for the Special Issue of the IEE Proceedings
Systems Biology.
Manuscripts submitted for the BTK meeting will be considered for publication
in the Special Issue of the IEE journal
for Systems Biology to be published in September 2006. Each submission
will be reviewed by two members of the international scientific advisory
board. The reviewing will be strict; contributions should contain new ideas
or results and should be independent publications. Manuscripts that are
not accepted for Systems Biology will be published in a separate form. Manuscripts
may not be longer than 3 pages in the journal. This poses a limit of 3000
words for a submission not containing any figures or tables and 2000 words
for manuscripts containing a total of 6 figures and/or tables. Manuscripts
containing more than 3000 words cannot be included in the special issue.
The special issue will be available during the meeting if we stick to a
very tight time schedule. The deadline for manuscript submission is March
1. Manuscripts are uploaded directly to Manuscript Central at: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/syb.
Follow the guidelines and author instructions given on the web site. Authors
will need to make clear both in the fields (that they need to fill in as
part of the submission process) as well as in a covering letter, that their
paper is for consideration in the BTK Special Issue edited by Jacky Snoep.
Authors will receive reviewers’ comments by April 1. Revised manuscripts
are to be submitted before April 15. Only manuscripts of which the accepted
version is uploaded on the Manuscript Central before May 1 will be included
in the Special Issue. Each of these deadlines is strict and necessary in
order to have the Special Issue available during the conference.
Manuscripts not accepted will be published in a separate BTK Proceedings
book, published by Vytautas Magnus university, Kaunas in the format required
for Proceedings (see Below).
2. Manuscript submission for the BTK Proceedings book
Please send the submissions for this book as an electronic version
(e-mail attachment) to the organisers (BTK2006@rmsb.u-bordeaux2.fr)
in the following formats:
TextWord 98 or earlier (please specify if the origin is PC or Mac) or RTF (rich text format). We cannot handle PDF files. You may add figures as .GIF or .JPG separately or included in the text. The final length of the paper/extended abstract should be 1-3 pages including references, figures and tables (A4 size paper, single line spacing, 2.5 cm margins on all sides). The paper should contain in sequence (See the Example, PDF 280 K):
Submission to the BTK Proceedings Book will be open since March 1, 2006.
The deadline for submission of papers to BTK proceedings book is May 15,
so the authors have time to to redirect their papers rejected by IEE journal
for Systems Biology. The submission of papers/extended abstracts that were
not submitted to IEE journal for Systems Biology is possible. The Organizing
group together with the help of the International Advisory Board will evaluate
all submitted papers before accepting to the BTK Proceedings book. Authors
may be asked to improve the manuscript until June 1. Organizers have the
right to reject the paper if it does not fit in the scope of the meeting
or if it does not fulfill the format requirements. Notification of acceptance
of submissions to BTK proceedings book is on June 10, 2006.
The contributions not included in the special issue of Systems Biology will
be available during the meeting. Participants will receive BTK Proceedings
book upon registration with their conference bag. The selection of speakers
will be made from all submissions. The format for posters will be indicated
in the final registration form information.
